FATAL FORECAST
An Incredible True Tale of Disaster and Survival at Sea
When the Fair Wind and the Sea Fever left their Cape Cod port on that chilly November day in 1980, they expected only clear seas. Indeed, National Weather Service forecasts trumpeted clear skies and gentle waters, even though the only weather buoy in the vicinity was malfunctioning. Not long after the lobster fishermen reached the feeding grounds, the skies darkened; the winds picked up; and 90-foot waves buffeted the two small ships. The Fair Wind capsized, trapping its crew in a careening coffin, and Sea Fever weakened under the unremitting onslaught. Fatal Forecast recounts the hour-by-hour struggles of the brave sailors to survive three hellish days in the savage seas.
