If a container has a number 1 -5 stamped inside the recycle symbol, you can recycle it at the Transfer Station!
#1 Poly(ethylene terephthalate): Soda bottles, water bottles, medicine containers.
#2 High-density Polyethylene: Containers for: laundry detergent, milk, shampoo, conditioner, dish soap, motor oil. More recent bullet proof vests, various toys.
#3 Poly(vinyl cloride): Pipes, coffee containers, shower curtains, meat wraps, cooking oil bottles, shrink wrap, clear tubing, vinyl dashboards and seat covers.
#4 Low-density Polyethylene: plastic wrap, certain brands of sandwich bags.
#5 Polypropylene: Tupperware®, syrup bottles, yogurt tubs.
Plastic shopping bags- Can be recycled at area Grocery Stores
Plastic bags are made of petrochemicals, a nonrenewable resource.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, only 1% of plastic bags were recycled in 2000 If one ton of plastic bags were to be reused or recycled, the energy equivalent of 11 barrels of oil is saved.
Even if Plastic shopping bags are recycled, the process is limited, and expensive.
Everyone uses plastic shopping bags because "they're so convienent and easy to carry", but did you know that reusable grocery bags:
· hold more groceries - means less trips from the car to the kitchen
· are stronger than plastic- means more groceries can fit
· last longer than plastic - mo more wasting money and resources
Australia, Bangladesh, France, United Kingdom, Alaska, San Francisco, and Zanzibar have banned plastic bags, depending upon reusable cloth bags or paper bags.
In China, Ireland, Israel, South Africa, bags may not be legally given away to shoppers, and must instead be sold.
