Department of Community Planning and Development

The role of the Planning Department is to help the Town plan and implement initiatives that will attain the vision of the residents for the future development of the Town by:

  • Working with applicants by reviewing and facilitating the review of pre-application and concept development plans for preliminary and definitive subdivisions, special permits and site plan review project proposals;
  • Conducting a comprehensive review of all project application submittals and facilitating the public hearing process as well as the consultant peer review process;
  • Researching and preparing Zoning By-Law amendments as well as amendments to the Subdivision Rules & Regulations to include public review and implementation;
  • Working with the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Board of Selectmen, Conservation Commission, Tax Increment Finance Board, Economic & Business Development Committee and Route 138 Steering Committee as technical staff to provide information that allows each to make informed decisions;
  • Researching and preparing grant applications that will aid the Town in reaching its overall planning goals;
  • Promoting the implementation of the goals and objectives of the town’s Master Plan;
  • Work in conjunction with the regional planning agency (Southeastern Regional Planning & Economic Development District) to attain technical assistance and grant application support to available at the municipal level; and
  • Providing general information to the public relative to any documents, procedures or public files relative to department projects, procedures or policies.
